What is Library in Windows 7 Library

Library is the new addition in Windows 7 and it is one of the features that many users liked it. Library is a kind of default folder where you can keep the Videos, Audio and pictures. In previous version of Windows operating system we can see a similar structure when you open the Windows explore. On the left side of the Window explorer you can see Music, Pictures. Now those folders are combined and created as a virtual folder called Library.

Library is a virtual folder that displays data from more than one folder. You can add your own custom library as well apart from the default library. Windows 7 include this feature because they want to keep all the data in one place so that the users data will be kept in once place and it is easy to manage.

System will index the folder in order to fasten the search for those folders. You can search your entire folder from one location. Library will not contain the actual items. They will contain the only the virtual folders and provides a single access point to view or search the user folders.

For each virtual Library folders we can set default paths to save the files, so that all specific files will be saved in the default folder of the Library. In order to change the default file path open the Windows explorer and select a library path and right the library path and select properties will show you the selected folder properties.

Once the Select folder property is opened it will show you the list of Virtual folders. It will show other information like the location that is currently configured, Size of the library. You can add or remove folder to the library using Include a folder button and Remove button. If you select Show in navigation pane check box then it will be displayed in the navigation pane. Check the shared check box to share the folder with others.

In order to change the default locations for each folder of the library, First you need to include the folder by clicking Include a folder… button to select the folder and then select the respective folder and select Set save location to select the default location to save the files. Now the new files which are saved in the library will be automatically saved in the appropriate folders (Check the below screenshot).

You can also change the library type to General Items, Documents, Music, Pictures and Videos . Any time you can restore the default (check the below screenshot).
