This article explains how to convert a music CD which is in Compact Disk format to Wma, Mp3 or other supported format in Windows Media player.

How to rip a CD using Windows Media Player

Ripping a CD is extracting the RAW music from CD to the other format. Music that is stored in a CD is in CDA or CDAA format (Compact Disc). I am not talking about the Mp3 CD. Old music CD is in RAW format and it cannot be copied to the computer directly. You can directly hear the music from the CD; if you copy the files from CD and paste the files to the computer directly it cannot be played in the computer as it is Compact disk format.

Daily you cannot keep the CD in the computer to hear the songs; instead you can convert the compact disk format to other format like wma or Mp3 format to hear the songs directly from the computer instead of using a CD which may be damaged at some point of time.

There are several software's available to rip the CD format to other formats. Windows media player also used to convert the Compact disk format to other formats.

If you rip the CD to Mp3 format and it is a compressed format and will lose some quality which is very minimal. If you don't want to lose anything you can convert the music into .wav file. Mp3 will save the disk space compared to other formats.

Windows Media Player can able to rip the cd to other format. Open the Windows Media player and click the Rip button will show you the list of files which is available in your CD if you inserted the CD. You can rip the files and you can burn the converted file to another CD or DVD directly from Windows Media player. You can choose the output format

Once you inserted the Audio cd in to the cd drive then automatically it will be listed in Windows media player Rip tab. now you can select the Rip format by selecting one of the format from the list, by default Windows Media Audio will be selected (.wma). You can select WAV format for the lossless music file or Mp3 for the compressed file which will save some space; you can choose "More options" to modify the default ripping format and other settings to rip the cd. Next to Rip tab Burn tab is available to burn the converted files.
You can modify the Audio format, Rip music files location, Audio quality and other settings can be modified in the Options. For beginners do not change the settings as it might affect the quality of the music (Check the below screenshot)
