This article talks about the features of Microsoft XPS Viewer.
While
Microsoft XPS document
format is a great format for storing documents in their original printable layout, it takes a software of equivalent capability to exploit all the features available in the
XPS document
format and
Microsoft XPS Viewer
does exactly what it needs to do. While you can view and print PDF documents from any computer, XPS has got some additional features which are very much visible right from the
Microsoft XPS Viewer
. The
Microsoft XPS Viewer
has basically three buttons which display menus of three types of functionalities. They are -
1. File
2. Permissions
3. Signatures
File
- The file menu in
Microsoft XPS Viewer
has all the basic functionalities which you would use in any PDF document viewer such as Adobe Acrobat Reader. Using this menu, you can open a new file or save a file in XPS format. And of course you can print the document using a physical printer attached to the computer or you can exit the program.
Permissions
- A document may be sensitive and may contain some information which you would not like to share with everyone. People want that they have the control over the content of their files. This is typically the case when a lot of people are involved in a project being guided by some mentor or a project coordinator. This scene shows a significant part of any modern middle to large sized business environment. Keeping this in view, Microsoft has made the
Microsoft XPS Viewer
capable enough to set and handle the permissions on an XPS document.
You can actually use your Windows account from a Windows 2008 server or Windows 2008 R2 server to authorize your document using
Microsoft XPS Viewer
. Once the permissions have been set, no one who does not hold the necessary permission will be able to manipulate anything in the document. While this is much the same as PDF format, it gives you an additional freedom of protecting your document while sharing the content over the network. This is an added benefit against the PDF format and viewers to
Microsoft XPS Viewer
and the very format also.
Signatures
- Digital Signatures do the same work which the wax in olden days served for letter delivery. A wax sealed envelope ensured the receiver that the letter inside the envelope has come from a genuine source and has not been tampered with.
Digital signatures
give the same confirmation to the receiver of a digital file for a modern user in
Microsoft XPS Viewer
. It is almost the same like you would like to browse the Internet in the protected mode because it makes sure that what you are watching has come from a reliable source whom you can trust.
Microsoft XPS Viewer
comes with inbuilt functionality of handling digital signatures. You can sign your own XPS document and distribute it so that the receiver or the reader is able to validate the content coming from you. If a document comes with a non-genuine signature, you can also request a signature from the person who sent you the file.
