What is a XPS Viewer

The XPS (XML paper specification) files are similar to PDF format files. The XPS format is a format of Microsoft which is a competitor to PDF format. You can view a XPS document using XPS viewer. Let us see what is an XPS viewer.

The XPS document is a file with an extension of '.xps'. The XPS documents can be created by any program that has the print feature. For example you can create a XPS document from MS Word, MS Power point, MS EXcel etc. Just select File->Print and select the printer name as "Microsoft Office XPS document writer" and save it as an .xps file. You can see a screen shot below of how to save a document as a .xps file.

The XPS files can only be viewed using the XPS viewer. If the XPS viewer is installed in your computer, you can view a XPS document just by double clicking on the document.

Many options are available in XPS viewer for managing the xps documents:

  • You can save a copy of the XPS document on your computer
  • You can search the XPS document for a word or a sentence by using XPS Viewer similar to what we do in MS Word
  • It is possible to zoom in or out so that we can easily read the text and pictures
  • It is possible to digitally sign the document
  • You can also set permissions so that only the permitted people can access the document. This is done by applying the document permissions in XPS Viewer
