Windows 7 improvements in power management
One of the ways to save the environment is to power consumption. Most of the companies and individuals are using computers which will eat more power and wastage of power is more in software companies because most of the computers are not switched off as it is running months without switching off the computer will use power and it will produce heat and in order to cool the system we require AC which again will take more power.
Windows 7 operating system has some improvements in
Power Management Features
and the desktop and notebook users will make use of the features who want to green. In a laptop we can minimize the power by reducing the power of the screen. When the system is not in use then we can dim the power of the screen after some time we can turn off the display or turn on sleep mode to utilize the power of
Power Management Features
in Windows 7.
Click Windows Start button and open the
Control Panel
and open
Power Options
Window will show you the power options and under
Select a power plan
select
change plan settings
which is selected for the system. It will show you 3 options with
Dim the display, Turn of the display and Put the computer to sleep
and as well as to adjust the brightness of the system. You can select and apply the settings based on the Battery of Plugged in to the system (Check the below screenshot).
These settings are basic and you can click the link
Change advanced power settings
to select the customized settings like hard disk, Desktop background settings, Wireless adapter settings, USB settings, Multimedia settings. You can modify the settings to stop the power supply for various devices when the computer is in sleep mode will save more power. For each device show various options to select to minimize or to maximize the performance of the computer.
You can create your own plan to customize the power management options. In addition to all the power options Windows 7 operating system is designed to work with less power.
In Windows 7 operating system architecture level improvements are also included in order to work with less power. By default if the power of your battery is 10% then system will warn you about the power and if 5 % then the system will automatically go to hibernate mode. By using the advanced power management features you can modify the default hibernate and warning time.
Power efficiency can be diagnosed by using powercrf.exe utility. The utility can be run using run as administrator mode. To open the command prompt in the administrator mode by clicking the Windows start button and type
cmd
in the search button and press
Ctrl + Shift + Enter
to open the command prompt as administrator. Once the command prompt is opened then type
powercfg /Energy
to check the system for issues in the system for power settings. It will generate a report and it will be stored by default in
C:\Windows\system32\energy-report.html
. You cannot open the html page directly from windows path, so copy the files to your desktop and then open the report and correct the reported issues.
