Creating Partition in Windows 7

Partitions on hard drives are created to serve various purposes.

Some of them are :

1) To make our system capable of hosting multiple operating systems.

2) To save files related to a particular category in different partitions for the ease of locating them.

3) To install some applications or programs that requires quite a lot of memory

To facilitate all the above functionalities we need to partition our hard drive. The size and the number of partitions depends on the size of our hard disk.

Creating partition in Windows 7 can be done with the help of an inbuilt utility called Disk Management

Follow the below steps which will guide you through the process of creating a partition on your system.

1) Go to My Computer on the Desktop.

2) Right Click on My Computer

3) Several options will be displayed amongst which you have to click on Manage which comes below Open option

4) A new window for Computer Management opens up.

5) Here you have three options in the Name pane , System Tools , Storage and Services & Applications, which are also present as tabs on the left hand side pane.

6) Click on the Storage tab.

7) Under this storage tab you have Disk Management option which should be clicked on.

8) As you click this a set of volumes currently present on your system are displayed on the Name pane.

9) Here you need to select the drive that you want to partition. For example if you have only C drive currently on your system then click on C drive that appears in the Name pane.

10) Right click on the drive and you are presented with a set of options.

11) Select Shrink Volume which is the seventh option presented.

12) Now a shrink window opens up named as Shrink C:

13) In this window you are presented with the details of the total size of the drive currently, the size available for shrinking which when used completely will be the size of the to be created partition.

14) Here you are also prompted to enter the amount of space to shrink. This value should always be a minimum of 1000 MB and should always be less than the space available for shrinking.

15) Once the required values are entered click on Shrink button available.

16) The shrinking process starts and once it is completed you will be presented with an option in the Computer management window which says so and so size Unallocated.

17) Click on it and a wizard known as New simple volume opens up.

18) Here you have the option of formatting and naming the new partition.

19) In the file system option NTFS should be selected and the name of the partition should be entered where Volume label is prompted for.

20) Click on next and follow the rest of the instructions.

21) Click on Finish and your new partition is ready for your use.
