Mos of you might have faced the problem of hard disk crash and losing data. There is a simple method to back up your data using gmail. This article explains how to back up data using gmail.

How to back up your files using Gmail?

Do you back up your important documents and files quote often? If not, then it is a must to back up the important files and documents because you do not know when your hard disk may crash and you may lose important data. It is a good practice to always back up your data.

There are various methods to back up your data. I use various methods to back up data which include emailing files to myself, burning the files to CD, making multiple copies on network computers etc. But it is a bit time consuming doing all these tasks.

There is a software which you need to install in your computer which create a virtual drive which points to your gmail account which allows you to back up the data in your gmail account. By using this you can theoretically use unlimited amount of free space available on your gmail account.

The 'Gmail Drive' is a shell namespace extension which creates a virtual file file system in your Gmail account so that you can use it as a storage medium for your files. 'Gmail Drive' adds a new drive to your computer under 'My Computer' folder where you can create new folders or copy and drag files.

When you create a new file using GMail Drive, it generates an email and posts it to your GMail account. The file is attached as an attachment to your email. The GMail system periodically searches your mail account to see if new files have arrived and it builds up the directory structure. But this process is automatic. Basically GMail Drive works as any other hard drive installed in your computer. You can simply copy files to and from the GMail Drive folder by using drag'n'drop like you're used to with the normal Explorer folders.

Only thing you shold remember is that you need to have an active internet connection and GMail account to use GMail Drive.
