How to speed up shutdown time of Windows

Is your computer taking long time to shut down? It will be a frustrating task waiting for your Windows 7 PC to shut down completely especially when you are rushing to go somewhere.

Windows 7 may take its own time to close all the programs and shut down completely. If this problem is troubling you, Let me tell you how to speep up the shut down process of Windows 7 computer. You need to make some changes to the Windows Registry.

  • First go to the Start menu. In the search box type 'regedit' and press ENTER.

  • Now the Registry editors opens up. In the Registry editor, go to the following key as shown in the screen shot below.
    \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINES\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control

  • In the right side, right click on the key 'WaitToKillServiceTimeout' and choose Modify. The key 'WaitToKillServiceTimeout' determines how long the system waits for services to stop after the system is shutting down. Please do not set it to any value, because services need enough time to write cache into computer before shutting down. You can input a number between 2000-20000 (2-20 seconds) and choose OK. See the Screen shot below.

I have set the time out to 10000 ( 10 seconds). This value can be set between 2000 to 20000.

  • Now close Registry Editor
