How to secure WinZip for windows

WinZip is used in windows operating systems. When you double-click on an .EXE file compressed within a Zip file a warning message arises that it contains virus. So, to prevent virus infections on your computer you must know certain security tips.

Here are some don'ts :-


  • You must not open a Zip file that is attached to your e-mail from an unknown source.But sometimes you can receive infected files even from people you know.
  • Never download Zip files from untrusted web sites.

    This don'ts is applicable not in WinZip file but also every files.

    Here are some do's :-


  • Always scan your e-mails and files through antivirus because new viruses are discovered almost daily, you be sure to keep your anti-virus program up to date.
    Never mind if you have automatic updating.
  • Otherwise you can login to http://www.winzip.com for further details.

    Disable Hidden File Name Extensions


    An option called "Hide extensions for known file types" is always installed in windows initially and it is enabled. When this option is enabled, the Windows will not display the file name extensions e.g:-.EXE, .DOC, etc. for file types that it knows. It is dangerous.

    You must be in doubt how it is dangerous?

    Explain you with an example. Imagine you might have a virus-infected file named "holiday.jpg.exe". If the hidden extension option is enabled, this file will appear on your desktop or in Windows Explorer as "holiday.jpg", leading you to think that it is a harmless vacation picture. In fact, it is an executable program, and opening it could infect your computer.

    How to disable hidden extensions?



    Here are the steps:

    step-1:-

    you open 'My computer'.

    step-2:-

    Then you click 'Folder Options', which will be located in either the 'View' menu or the 'Tools' menu, depending on your version of Windows.

    step-3:-

    In the Folder Options dialog, you click the 'View' tab.

    step-4:-

    Then you 'Uncheck' the box labeled 'Hide extensions for known file types' and click 'OK'.

    Always keep in mind be safe while clicking on untrusted files and folders.
