Okay I explain you what it is. A windows firewall is a boundary that secures your computer and defense against the virus and worms which enters your computer without you knowledge. You should know that in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), Windows Firewall is turned on by default. So, don't have to worry.

From above you came to know what a windows firewall is. Now you will be excited to know how it works. Do you? Okay then lets proceed.

When someone on the Internet or a network tries to connect to your computer a request is send "unsolicited request" which means that it needs permission to enter and sooner the firewall blocks the connection. It always ask you and you must always activate the ask option. After knowing you can allow to show to you. If you choose to unblock the connection, Windows Firewall creates an exception so that the firewall won't bother you when that program needs to receive information in the future.

Pros:


1.It helps you to block computer viruses and worms from reaching your computer.
2.It asks for your permission to block or unblock certain connection requests.
3.It creates security logs or records.

Cons:


1.If you don't have an antivirus program then it will not remove viruses of its own, if the virus is already in your computer.
2.It doesn't open e-mail attachments from senders that you don't know. Even if you know and trust the source of the e-mail you should still be cautious.
3.It blocks spam or unsolicited e-mail from appearing in your inbox.

How to turn Windows Firewall on or off:-



Follow the steps below:

step-1:-

To Open windows firewall in xp then first click on 'Start' then click the 'Control Panel' option on left click button and then double-click Windows Firewall.window1 Windows Firewall is turned on by default for all Internet and network connections. However, some computer manufacturers and network administrators might turn it off.

step-2 :-

on the 'General' tab, window2click one of the two options:
Recommended which is generally done or used. This means on.
not recommended which is never accepted and allowed not to click it as it doesn't help you to protect against viruses or any harmful programs.
