This article explains how to configure the private or home network and public network Firewall in Windows 7


How to configure Windows 7 Firewall


Firewall is playing an important part in internet world to protect your computer from hacks. Firewall will protect your computer silently running in the background from malicious code and unwanted software to access your computer without any traces will be notified to you or it will block the access based on the setting in the Firewall.

Check your system whether Firewall is enabled or disabled in Windows 7. You can enable and disable the firewall for private and public networks.

  1. Open the control panel

  2. Select the System and Security link
  3. Click the Windows Firewall

  4. Turn on the Windows Firewall link. Now your Firewall is activated for your system


As I already mentioned that you can set the firewall for private and public network

To enable Firewall in private network or public network


Open the control panel and then click System and Security link and open the Windows Firewall will show you Home or Work(private) Networks and below that it will show Public Networks.

If the network shows inactive then you are not having network connection for the private or public network.

To enable the Firewall for private network check the Home or Work(Private) Network Settingsand select the Turn on Windows Firewall then select the Notify me when Windows Firewall blocks a new program and click OK button. You might get a prompt for the User Access Control (UAC) and will ask for the administrator credentials enter the user name and password click OK to enable the Windows Firewall in Windows 7.

Below the Private Network Location Settings you can see the Public Network Location Settings and select the Turn on the Windows Firewall and select Notify me when Windows Firewall blocks a new program and then click OK button to enable the Firewall to your computer.

In Windows 7 we are having an advanced settings options to fine tune the Firewall. Click the Advanced Settings link on the left side of the same Window.

In Advance Settings we can modify the Domain Profile, Private Profile, Public Profile and IPsec Settings. In Domain Profile you can set Inbound connections and Outbound connections will block or allow the incoming or outgoing data transfer.
