Microsoft's system management server is such server that allows the user to have various network management tasks and functions like

Traffic monitoring- It handles the request made by the client and divides the request on the basis of their coming priority such that on coming first come and first serve basis.

Network diagnostics- If any sort of error or the problem occurs in between then, it would help the user in solving and diagnosing that problem.

Software inventory- It is also used to make stock of the lower level software that handles the various control and the co-ordination activities.

Software metering- Calculating the performance of the software on the basis of the charts and graphs with the help of fast accessing tools that exist in the server.

Report generation- It generates the delivery reports and send them to the client in case any problem occurs.

* Agents
* Management Information Database
* SNMP

The network management console receives the information gathered by agents. These in formations are then presented to administrator in form of graphs, printed, reports, statistical readouts etc.

The agents are special programs that run on network devices. They gather information for eventual transmissions. Most of the network devices like hubs, bridges, routers etc. have build in agents.

The management Information Database are used to store the individuals piece of information gathered by agent.

SNMP stands for the simple Network management protocol which includes query language between agents and the console.

SNMP consists of two standards-

* Simple network management protocol
* Remote networking
