The news about IIS Developer Express came out recently through a blog from ScottGu. There is not much public information available yet about this web server from Microsoft, which is not yet publicly available.

Visual Studio 2010 and IIS Developer Express

The official blog from ScottGu clearly indicates that there will be builtin support for IIS Developer Express from Visual Studio 2010. Developers will be able to launch their website directly from VS 2010 which run against the IIS Express. The additional options like Visual Studio buil-in webserver and full version of IIS also will be available.

How to integrate IIS Developer Express with Visual Studio 2008

There is no official word yet from Microsoft regarding support for IIS Express from VS 2008. I am hoping that Microsoft will release some service packs for VS2008 to enable built-in support for IIS Developer Express from Visual Studio 2008.

According to some posts from ScottGu, there is no integrated support for IIS Express from VS 2008. Instead, you will have to launch the IIS Express from command line and then launch your web application on this web server.

But, even if there is no built-in support for IIS Developer Express from the Visual Studio, developers will be able to use the IIS Developer Express as the web server for their ASP.NET web application projects. All they will have to do is, specify the correct URL as the start up page in their web project settings.

Once I get access to the IIS Developer Express, I will explore more and post the screenshots here.

A lot of my web projects are still using VS 2008 and I would love to switch to IIS Developer Express instead of the built-in webserver to take advantage of cool new features of IIS Express.
