This is probably the absolute horror situation: you turn the computer on as usual and out of a black screen with a short error message, nothing happens: NTLDR is missing. For this error there are several possible causes. These range from the most banal things to serious problems. In most cases, the problem will resolve without data loss again. If it threatens the loss of data, one can only hope that a current backup of the data is available. If this is not the case, then it is true, of course angry.

Causes for the error message NTLDR is missing:

  • Floppy disk or USB stick inserted / connected, and Windows tries to start from there.

  • Additional hard drive installed and set jumpers for master and slave wrong.

  • RAID set up incorrectly or not activated even though there.

  • Entries in the boot.ini manually changed.

  • HDD cable loose or damaged.

  • System files stored on the hard drive or damaged.

  • For most hardware problems, it is sufficient to eliminate this and the error message NTLDR is missing will not show up. However, if system files have been deleted or corrupted hard drive to be the, and here it is primarily the files NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM, this one is again Windows XP CD to the hard copy of the must.

For this, restart the computer from the Windows XP CD and activates the Recovery Console. Here you can either use the following commands:

    FIXMBR C:

    FIXBOOT C:

    COPY x: \ I386 \ NTLDR C: \

    COPY x: \ I386 \ NTDETECT.COM C: \

It is to note the following: Each command will be executed separately and confirmed with enter. Then comes the next command. In the third and fourth step x with the actual drive letter of the drive with the loaded Windows XP CD to be replaced. So when the CD in drive E: is, then the command must be called as follows:

    COPY E: \ I386 \ NTLDR C: \

Then again, Windows should be run as normal.
