This resource will provide you information about the IDE hard disk and its types.
What is IDE hard disk?
IDE stands for
Integrated Drive Electronics
. In the hard drive department most of the computers are still relying on the
venerable IDE technology
. IDE is the common term that is used to refer the type of the
hard drive connection
technically. The IDE technology is referred by the term ATA which stands for
Advanced Technology Attachment
. Than the term IDE, the ATA is used in common. There are two
types of interface connection
for the ATA drives they are
Serial ATA
and
Parallel ATA
ATA/IDE origin
The
ATA was originated
in the year 1984 and was commonly used among all the system. This technology was used as a method to combine the hard drive and the controller for making a direct connection to the bus of the
old IBM Advanced Technology (AT) computer
. In the
ATA interface drives
this particular controller/drive combination is used which is originated by the marketing departments of some manufactures. In the
modern hard dives
PATA or the SATA are used and which can be seen in detail as follows.
PATA Hard drive
PATA is the
old technology
which stands for the
Parallel ATA
. This PATA is a
16 bit parallel interface
in which the
16 bit of the data
are transmitted down simultaneously in an interface cable.
Ribbon cables
with the 40 pins are used to
connect the computer system
with the drives. In the
laptop PATA drives
44 pins are used to connect and give the interface. The next feature of the PATA cable is that the interface can be created with
2 drives in one single cable
. This two drives are controlled with the help of the
jumpers
in order to determine the position by which the drive should be activated and used that is either Master or Slave.
SATA Hard drives
SATA hard drive stands for the
Serial ATA
. This particular technology came into existence in the year 2000 officially. But the computer systems adopted this technology from the year 2003. The SATA sends single bit of the data at a time down the
interface cable
. There is no synchronization needed so that this enables to use smaller cables and this also allows
high cycling speeds
. This is the main
advantage of the SATA cables
and the
SATA drives
. This helps in
reducing the complexity of the cabling
. The interfacing feature is completely different from the PATA while it is still
compatible on the ATA standard
of the software level. There are
seven pins in the SATA cable
which helps in allowing much thinner cables that are useful to enable easier routing within the computer case itself. Every cable has only one device connection so that there is no necessity for the jumpers for
configuring the system hard drive
into master position or the slave position.
