Want to set up a broadband connection in Windows 7? Confused how to do it? This article will tell you in details about how to setup a broadband connection.
To setup broadband connection in Windows 7
Most of us have a broadband connection to the Internet in these days. Before going for the Broadband setup we will see what the types of connections available are.
Broadband connections are defined by their bandwidth and fall into the below categories
Digital Subscriber Line (DSL)
DSL is a wire line technology that transmits data in a copper telephone lines in conjunction with special hardware on the switch and the user ends of the line. The Special hardware allows for continuous digital connection over the phone DSL-based broadband speeds ranging from kilo bytes per second (Kbps) to millions of bits per second (Mbps). The availability and speed of your DSL service may depend on the distance between your home/office and the Service provider. The most commonly available technology is ADSL for Residential customer and SDLC by Business customers.
ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line)
ADSL Broadband is mostly used by residential customer.ADSL allows you to use the regular telephone line and internet at the same time without disturbing the calls on that line. The Download rate varies from 1.5 to 9Mbps and the upload rate varies from 16 to 640Kbps based on your connection speed and type of connection.
SDSL (Symmetrical Digital Subscriber Line)
SDLC is similar to ADSL connection. It is used typically for Business purpose as it requires for video conferencing, but it requires a extra telephone line for voice calls.
Cable Modem
Cable modem service is provided using the same coaxial cables to deliver the internet and picture, sound to your TV. Most cable modems are external devices that have two connections, one to the cable and the other to a computer.
Any of above types of connections provides high-speed access to the Internet.
Every connection requires a service from ISP (based on your geographical location. In India Internet service providers are BSNL, Tata, Airtel and many more). Cable modem service does not usually require a username and password to login to the internet then you typically don't need to establish a separate broadband connection. On the other hand if your service provider requires you to use a username and password it has assigned, then you need to set the username and password for the connection
Broadband connection required a modem and router, usually that will be provided by your service provider.
If you have the equipment then open the control panel it will show the "Network and Sharing Center"
Click the "Network and Sharing Center", and select the "Connect to the Internet" option
In the wizard, click Connect to the Internet, and click the Next button.
"Connect to Internet" wizard will list the existing connection available that could be used to connect to the Internet, select "No, create a new connection" and then click next.
The wizard gives you three selections from which to choose. The choices are Wireless, Broadband (PPPoE) (For DSL or Cable), and Dial-up. Click "Broadband (PPPoE)". for Broad band connection select "Broadband (PPPoE)"
Then it show you "Type the information from your internet service provider(ISP)" page where you need to type the username and password provided by your ISP in the text boxes provided. Select the "Show characters" checkbox to see your password and verify the correct syntax.
Select the "Remember this password" checkbox to save your password for future use. Windows 7 also enables you to share your connection with anyone with access to your computer. If you want other users to have access to this connection, check "Allow other people to use this connection."
Click Connect to create the connection and establish a connection to the ISP.You have finished your broadband setup and now it is ready to use
